Sheet Metal Workers work not just in construction, but in fabrication and mechanical services.  They work in two major classifications, Architectural Sheet Metal and HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning).  From raw sheet metal they measure, detail, draw, design, form, fit, fabricate, weld, solder, assemble, install, finish, repair, and maintain many types of metals. 

Their work includes metal roofs, louvers, flashing, gutters, wall panels, decking, siding, signs, ornamental finishes, skylights, kitchen equipment, chutes, conveyors, shelving, lockers, toilet partitions, ducts for heating, ventilating, and air conditioning, and specialized metal fabrication.

Apprenticeship
The Sheet Metal Workers Apprentice program involves:

  • 6500 hours (usually five years) of on-the-job training
  • 1080 hours of classroom and laboratory training

Requirements for application:

  • May be as young as 17 years of age with written and signed parental consent; otherwise must be 18 years of age;
  • Valid driver’s license;
  • High school diploma, G.E.D., or high school proficiency test, in English;
  • Must pass a math test with a score of 70%; and,
  • Further testing and ranking for qualified applicants.
