Roofers and Waterproofers PDF Print E-mail
Roofers and Waterproofers apply a variety of materials to roofs and other surfaces.  These materials include hot and cold applied built-up roofing and waterproofing, asphalt shingles, tile, and single ply materials such as EPDM, PVC, Hypalon, and modified bitumen.  Roofers and waterproofers work with manual and thermostatically controlled kettles, power hoists and lifts, compressors, and spray equipment, and with hand tools such as hammers, hatchets, and knives. 

Teamwork is important, as roofers and waterproofers work in crews.  Work is usually in the open and at heights, on roofs or scaffolds.  The work is strenuous, with prolonged standing, climbing, bending, and squatting.  Risks of injury may come from falls and burns from hot asphalt.  During the rainy season roofers are sometimes unemployed.

Apprenticeship
The Roofer and Waterproofer Apprentice program involves:

  • 4000 hours (usually three and one half years) of on-the-job training
  • 400 hours of classroom instruction

Requirements for application:

  • Proof of age (must be at least 18);
  • No high school diploma or G.E.D. required, but must be able to read and speak English within 12 months of indenture;
  • Participation in an orientation session;
  • Able to work at extreme heights, on sloping surfaces, and in all types of weather and to lift heavy materials and equipment; and,

High school mathematics through algebra and classes in mechanical drawing are helpful but not required.
