Pile Drivers sink long vertical supports into soils both on land and under water to underpin bridges, wharfs, docks, elevated roadways, buildings, and other structures.  Some specially trained Pile Drivers also work underwater as construction deep-sea divers.  The work is heavy and often wet or muddy and usually involves heavy loads and heavy equipment.  Much of the work is performed afloat on water or from structures over water.

Apprenticeship
The Pile Driver Apprentice program involves:

  • 4800 hours (four years) of on-the-job training
  • 612 hours of shop/classroom study

Requirements for application:

  • Must provide one of the following:
    • High school diploma
    • General Equivalency Degree (G.E.D.)
    • Proof of satisfactory completion of a pre-job preparatory course in Carpentry of at least six months; or
    • Proof of on-the-job training or experience of six months in the construction field; and,
  • Must be at least eighteen years old in general, but may be seventeen if his or her Apprenticeship Agreement is signed by a parent or guardian.

Applicants should have also a driver’s license and reliable transportation.

During the “open application period” applications may be submitted in person at the Carpenters Training Center in Pleasanton Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon and from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. or may be sent there by mail.  To learn dates of the “open application period” call (510) 635-4227.
