Field ironworkers assemble and erect prefabricated iron, steel, and reinforced concrete shapes to form the framework for buildings, towers, bridges, and other structures. They place steel deck for flooring systems. They bend, carry, and place reinforcing steel bars for concrete construction and fasten them together with tie wire. They place and tension post-tensioning cables in concrete construction. They rig and move very heavy objects, such as large transformers, pressure vessels, and sculptures. They install miscellaneous steel and other metal assemblies, including stairs, rails, balconies, fences, ladders, and fire escapes. They erect glass curtain wall systems and precast concrete wall panels. They demolish tall structures. They perform welding in connection with most of these tasks. Ironworkers often work at great heights and on open steel structures without scaffolding. They commonly lift and hand carry heavy loads.
