Bricklayer and Stonemason
Bricklayers construct walls, partitions, fireplaces, chimneys, and other structures from brick, concrete block, structural tile, or terra cotta. They also install linings on industrial kilns and furnaces. They must be able to lift more than fifty pounds continuously and to work on scaffolds.
Apprenticeship
The Bricklayer and Stonemason Apprentice program involves:
- Four years 8 months (7200 hours) of on-the-job training
- Must attend 3 to 4 1 week classes per year Monday thru Friday
Pointer-Cleaner-Caulker
Pointers-Cleaners-Caulkers caulk and seal joints in buildings and other structures to make them watertight. They apply cold membrane waterproofing in liquid or sheet good rolls. They pressure-inject epoxy into fractures and cracks in buildings to restore structural integrity. They power wash buildings. They must be able to work on swinging scaffolds up to five hundred feet above the ground.
Apprenticeship

- Three years (4500 hours) of on-the-job training
- Must attend 3 to 4 1 week classes per year Monday thru Friday
Marble Mason
Marble Masons cut, tool, trim, set and polish marble slabs in floors and walls. They must be unafraid of working at heights.
Apprenticeship
The Marble Mason Apprentice program involves:
- Three years (4500 hours) of on-the-job training
- Must attend 3 to 4 1 week classes per year Monday thru Friday
Marble Finisher apprentices perform a variety of tasks which assist the marble mason. Their duties include grinding and polishing marble and cleaning installed marble surfaces also mix mortar, plaster and grout.
Finishers repair chipped, cracked or broken marble pieces and may also erect scaffolds.
- Two years & 6 months (3500 hours) of on-the-job training
- Must attend 3 to 4 1 week classes per year Monday thru Friday
Terrazzo Mechanics
Terrazzo Mechanics install terrazzo floors, medallions, countertops, steps, etc., according to blueprints or other instructions. They are responsible for layout and installation of, floating beds, divider strips, pattern designs etc.
- Three years (4500 hours) of on-the-job training
- Must attend 3 to 4 one week classes per year Monday thru Friday
Terrazzo Finishers are employed by Terrazzo Contractors to assist Terrazzo Mechanics, their tasks include; mix mortar, chips, and aggregates, clean finished surfaces, stock materials, and perform other duties on new and remodeled construction. Work is physically strenuous.
- Two years (2800 hours) of on-the-job training
- Must attend 2 to 3 1 week classes per year Monday thru Friday
Requirements for application for all trades Bricklayer and Allied Crafts
Apprenticeships:
- Must apply in person at MDC Tracy
- Must be 18 or older
- Valid driver's license
- High school diploma or equivalency certificate
- Be willing and able to attend school as scheduled
Our new training facility in Tracy is 16,600 square feet and was designed solely for the purpose of training masonry apprentices. The facility includes two classrooms and a large conference room all containing state-of-the-art audio visual equipment for apprentice training.
