Members of Sign and Display Workers 510 transform large empty convention halls into small cities, with hundreds of thousands of square feet of modular display panels and exhibit booths. The industry has been rapidly changing in the last few years, with new systems that combine interlocking octagonal poles with metal slots and rigid foam core graphic panels that can be used to create almost any sort of structure. Added to that are massive plasma displays and all sorts of interactive computer electronics.

Creating a new home for the San Francisco Exploratorium is a challenge. The old building was part of the Palace of Fine Arts. To create a new site for the institution with the same aura of mystery, fused with the creativity and the light-hearted enjoyment of scientific discovery, carries a lot of expectation. But after visiting with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 6 as they transform Piers 15 and 17 on the Embarcadero from a monolithic warehouse shell to the Exploratorium’s new home, one can rest assured the Electricians, along with all the other San Francisco Building Trades, are up to the task.

Now in its third year, the San Francisco Unified School District summer intern program is hitting its stride. “Our placements are really starting to gel and become solid,” said Gus Amador, the program instructor and field supervisor. “We’ve learned from our past years, and the placements this year were of much more value to the interns, the contractors and the union.”

Members of Carpenters Local 22 work in the midst of what they create at the San Francisco International Airport carpentry shop. Every day, the 15 members working on site see people benefiting from what they have built. Their job is to construct whatever is required for the airport to meet the needs of the flying public and the airport tenants.
