 Securing the Middle Class, November Election Top Agenda

Securing the middle class was the theme of the California Labor Federation's 27th Biennial Convention July 22-23 in Oakland. Delegates discussed the right to organize, universal health care, education, a fair economy and protecting the environment. They passed resolutions in support of US Labor Against the War, strengthening global activism for economic justice and educating Californians about John McCain's real record, as well as others.

DPR's One Kearny Project Blends Old With New PDF Print E-mail
 Organized Labor recently visited DPR Construction's all-union One Kearny project located at Market and Kearny Streets. Superintendent Jerry McKinley said the new 12-story office building will bookend and support the existing original French Empire-style building next door that was built in 1902, and an annex on the east side of the building built in the 1960s. The previous three-story building that occupied the site, built in the 1920s, was demolished last August.

SPUR's New Home to Come Online Next Spring PDF Print E-mail
 Construction of the new home for the non-profit SPUR (San Francisco Planning and Urban Research) at 654 Mission Street is proceeding ahead of schedule, according to general contractor Nibbi Brothers. The $8.347-million construction project broke ground at the end of March and is expected to be completed by April 2009. Designed by Pfau Architecture Ltd., the SPUR Urban Center will be a 15,000 square foot facility featuring exhibition spaces, community meeting rooms for up to 125 people, and research facilities for SPUR volunteers, staff, and the general public.

SF School District Approves Project Labor Agreement PDF Print E-mail

 Necessity of Skilled Workers, On-Time Projects Cited

The San Francisco Board of Education approved a proposal by SF Unified School District Superintendent Carlos Garcia June 24 to adopt a Project Labor Agreement between the District and the SF Building and Construction Trades Council for a percentage of the construction work to be done under Prop A. Several construction union members spoke in support of the PLA, which was passed unanimously by the five board members present. (Board members Hydra Mendoza and Kim Shree-Maufus were absent.)
